Course description:
The module aims to present a comprehensive overview of Islam as a way of life. It will cover the main beliefs and practices of Islam from its origins to the contemporary period. The course will also show the diversity of Muslim interpretations and approaches to the sources of Islam (the Qur’an and the Sunna) and how these interpretations gave rise to various schools of thought and trends. It will cover: the rise of Islam, the life and the role of the Prophet Muhammad, the main sources of Islam, creeds and the schools of Kalam (theology), Sufism, Shari‘a and Islamic law, and current issues and debates in Muslim societies such as gender, jihad, pluralism.
Entry requirements: All levels
Start: This course will start in the beginning of the Academic year (September).
Contact hours: Two hours per week for each term (11 weeks) 22 weeks in total
